Thompson charges into victory lane

Seventeen-year-old United States Auto Club rookie and Fremont resident Cody Thompson continued his impressive development as an asphalt racer by winning the second of two USAC Ford Focus Midget Series main events on Saturday night, Sept. 11, at Stockton 99 Speedway.
Driving for Ron Sutton's Winner's Circle, Thompson almost won both races in the USAC Focus Midget Twin 40's presented by Star Racing Supply.
The evening kicked off with Thompson qualifying his Southern Rock-sponsored entry second fastest, with a time of 13.728 seconds around the historic quarter-mile oval.
A strong win in heat race two set up the field for the first 40 lap feature. Thompson rolled off the grid fifth out of the 12 cars on hand, but quickly went to the front. Thompson sliced his way to second by lap six.
After falling to third on lap 19, Thompson followed teammate Keegan Walmer back to the front of the field and took over second on the final lap of the race.
The second place finish lined up Thompson second-to-last in the second race after a full inversion.
In an amazing performance, Thompson was up to third place by just the sixth lap. Going after the leaders, Thompson paced himself slightly before making the big move for the lead on lap 14.
With still 26 laps to go, Thompson ran a smooth and consistent race to win the feature by nearly two seconds.
The win and second place finish move Thompson into third in the USAC NorCal Ford Focus Midget Series, just 24 points out of first place with three races to go.
Thompson also participated in the USAC Young Gun Midget races and finished second in the 20 lap main event.
"It was only a matter of time for Cody to get his first Focus Midget win to go along with his Young Guns Midget wins," driver coach Ron Sutton said. "But not only did Cody get the win, he did in dramatic fashion by coming from the back of the field. This kid put on a show and turned some heads."
Cody Thompson Racing will compete in the Oct. 9 race at Orange Show Speedway with a month off before the USAC Ford Focus Midget Nationals at the Las Vegas Bullring on Nov. 6. Drivers will be jockeying for their place on the Henry Ford Sweepstakes trophy and bragging rights to the national championship crown.
