20-year-old Andrew Barrientos, accused of shooting Fremont Officer Todd Young who was serving a warrant in Oakland, has been charged with attempted murder. Alameda County prosecutors have also charged the suspect with carjacking, shooting at an occupied vehicle and transporting marijuana.
Barrientos was arrested on Saturday, August 28, in San Ysidro, just a few feet from the U.S.-Mexico border. According to court documents Barrientos claims he did not know the victim was a police officer. "(This is) Not true and we will prove it in court. We cannot discuss the investigation or evidence that we have," Chief Craig Steckler told TCV.
The 39-year-old officer is recovering. "Officer Todd Young continues to improve. For anyone that is interested, there is a banner in the Police Department lobby for folks to sign and express their best wishes. The Police Department is at 2000 Stevenson Blvd. The lobby is open Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.," said Detective Bill Veteran, Fremont PD. |
