Kick like a girl - part 2

Over the Labor Day weekend, as families rejoiced in summer temperatures and made plans for barbecues and trips to the beach, dedicated soccer moms (and dads) wended their way to Osage Park in Danville for the Mustang Devil Mountain Soccer Tournament. Our very own Xtreme team, the girls U-9 competitive team from Newark, readied for their second tournament in as many weeks.
Fresh from their win in the previous week's Central Marin Tournament, the Xtreme were no longer the underdogs. This time the field was broader; in addition to the Mustang Angels and Mill Valley Rockers, teams that had competed in the Marin tourney, there were the Livermore Fusion and Ajax Athens (Modesto) teams to contend with. The format differed, though. Instead of an elimination set-up, this tournament just required teams to play one game with every other team; the winner to be decided by points.
The Xtreme played two games on Saturday, Sept. 4. They won their first against the Livermore Fusion, 1-0, and their second against the Mill Valley Rockers, 2-0. The low scores do not reflect the Xtreme's domination of both games. Sunday's (Sept. 5) two games against the Ajax Athens and the Mustang Angels mirrored those of the previous day. The girls won both their games easily, though the match play was rough at times, leading to more drama off the field than on.
When the Xtreme concluded all its games, it was the single undefeated team in the competition, making it the clear winner by points. Though there was a still a game to be played later in the evening, the tournament organizers agreed to let the Xtreme team members receive their humongous trophies early, in a rather anticlimactic award ceremony.
The team now looks forward to the official competitive soccer season for the Nor-Cal premier league, which begins this weekend. Details can be found at www.norcalpremier.com.
