All The Way Live: Urban Dance Festival
By Mona Shah
All the Way Live USA plans to be freestylin' at Ohlone College's indoor and outdoor theaters over much of the weekend in a two-day break dance festival Friday and Saturday. Hip Hop dancers will showcase their skills in energetic performances planned as a fundraiser for the youth of Nicaragua. B-boys and B-girls, as break-dancers like to call themselves, prefer the terms "urban dance" or "street dance." Competitors will battle for cash and top honors.
This dance style has evolved since its emergence on the streets of New York in the 1970s to include more discipline and athletic rigor. Usually this dance style is accompanied by pop, funk, or hip-hop music, often remixed to accentuate and prolong the breaks. Improvisation or "freestyling" can be a major element of performances. A group of dancers surround the dance floor while each participant takes their turn to execute tricks, freezes, and dance steps.
Top B-boys from around the country will show off their skills and teach workshops while local crews battle it out. Kool Raul (aka "RJ" from Supreme Soul) DJ's this event, with special guests "The Go Go Brothers" from Japan.
So pop, lock, slide and glide for some fierce street dancin' at "All the Way Live."
