Hero Award recipients 2010

Submitted By Hayward Education Foundation

This year, HEF chose to recognize and honor individuals, organizations and businesses that made selfless and significant contributions to the improvement of education in Hayward schools.

All the nominations were submitted by school principals and approved by the HEF Board of Directors. We are truly fortunate to have such outstanding individuals and organizations serving our students.

Evelyn Rueda - Office Manager
Nominated by Principal Gloria Prada, Palma Ceia Elementary School
Palma Ceia School's Office Manager Evelyn Ruada welcomes every member of the community and students with a professional attitude that sends the message that "she cares" and is ready to do whatever it takes to meet your needs. She donates her time after school and even at weekends. She offers assistance to the entire staff and never says "That's not my job." She is a positive person, active in all school programs and is a member of the School Site Council. Evelyn makes students feel safe, respected and protected. She finds her job exciting and motivates others with her positive energy.

Elvia Gauzin - Teacher
Nominated by Principal Ruthie Gale, Park Elementary School
Elvia is an exemplary 3rd grade teacher at Park. She is adored by staff, students and parents for the many extra hours she spends to ensure student success not only in her classroom but throughout the school. She is the first to embrace and encourage others with new methods and strategies to improve student learning. She has an infectious personality and succeeds in bringing staff together. She never forgets birthdays, anniversaries, births, deaths or other events. She is the first to bring a card, gift, cake, treats or flowers.

Ronald Gruel - Parent Volunteer
Nominated by Principal Rosalinda Canlas, Faith Ringgold School
Mr. Gruel generously serves our school site as a parent volunteer. He raises and lowers the flag, helps with traffic safety in the parking lot before and after school, mans the Parent Center, performs general "fix-it" maintenance and with his wife, Liaga, chairs our ELAC meetings. He helps set up classroom computer workstations, helps clean the cafeteria and any area that requires attention. He serves our school all day, daily, and is a true local hero in our school community.

Janet Carlson - Volunteer Community Member
Nominated by Principal Rosalinda Canlas, Faith Ringgold School
As a volunteer community member, Mrs. Carlson has generously served the students at our school for many years in almost every way possible. She organized and has maintained the school library. She has performed as yard supervisor, "nurse," office helper, etc., generously offering her help in any capacity. She has selflessly served our school, all day, daily, for many years until incapacitated by a recent illness. She is really a true local hero.

Mireya Baltierra - Parent Volunteer
Nominated by Principal John Hazatone, Ruus Elementary School
Mireya is selfless in her efforts to improve Ruus Elementary School. Students are the priority, as exemplified by her lead of parents and staff in devising a voluntary uniform policy. She attends all functions, community meetings and school-wide events. She is willing to listen to all parents and considers their input and needs for ways to improve all aspects of Ruus School. Mireya also serves as our ELAC president and is vice-chair of SSC.

Her contributions, organization and communication have increased parent involvement. She was instrumental in implementing our Ruus Parent Center this year. Mireya exemplifies the ideal that ALL students can learn, all families can be partners in education and that a neighborhood school should be the centerpiece of the community.
