The Friendship Walk returns to Fremont

Submitted By Lyn Bratton

Have you ever wanted to make a difference, but you thought you couldn't? Have you seen the homeless people on the street, but you didn't have change or food to give at that moment? Have you heard the news about the economy and the unemployment rate and thought you'd like to help, but you didn't know how? The answer is The Friendship Walk, now in its second year at Lake Elizabeth in Fremont.

The Friendship Walk, benefiting Feeding America and chiefly sponsored by the First Christian Church in Palo Alto, will take place on Saturday, September 18, starting at 10 a.m. and ending at 4 p.m. The registration fee is $20 for adults, $12 for children 12 and under, and includes a t-shirt and hamburger/hot dog barbecue lunch. Participants in the Walk collect sponsorships on a per-mile, per-lap or flat rate basis, and all sponsorships go directly to Feeding America, the leading hunger awareness and relief foundation in the country. The Walk itself occurs around the two-mile perimeter of Lake Elizabeth, and snacks and other refreshments are provided by our sponsors. We will also have DJ services provided by GreenTime Music.

Donations and sponsorships up to $5,000 will be matched by the First Christian Church in Palo Alto. We will have barrels for non-perishable food donations as well. Monetary donations will be circulated by Feeding America as needed throughout the nation, and food collections will stay in Alameda County and be distributed by the Alameda County Community Food Bank (ACCFB).

Last year's Walk took place in October. We had 46 participants, collected $2,685 in financial donations, and stacked up 190 pounds of food for the ACCFB. With the church's matching donation, we wrote a check to Feeding America for $5,370! Help us double that - or more - this year! Download your registration and sponsor forms at Registration is due by September 4. Those who show up at the event without advance registration can still participate, but only a certain number of additions will be allowed. For more information, visit our website or send an email to
