Niles Town Plaza Summer Concert
Submitted By Michael McNevin
The first annual Niles Town Plaza Summer Concert Series continues with its fifth free show in the historical Niles District of Fremont. Sunday, August 8th features three acts - the Louisiana blues and jazz of The California Honeydrops, the innovative sibling harmonies of The T Sisters band, and the Celtic and traditional tunes of The Red Shoes duo.
Every two weeks, a concert takes place in the plaza, featuring Americana, Blues, Folk, Bluegrass, Jazz, Pop, Country, and World Music.
The California Honeydrops are rapidly gaining popularity in the Bay Area and in recent months have enjoyed two sold-out shows at Yoshi's and well received appearances at Rancho Nicasio, Great American Music Hall, and the Freight and Salvage. Their music is wonderful; the band is energetic and fun. Digging deep into the roots of American music, they embrace the traditions of Blues, Gospel, Second Line New Orleans Jazz, and early R&B. With stellar performances of traditional material as well as their own innovative music, The California Honeydrops rock the house.
The T-Sisters are Erika, Rachel and Chloe Tietjen, a trio of sisters based in the Bay Area. They create original music and rediscover a variety of classic tunes. Their three-part harmonies fit smoothly together as only sibling harmony can, with an old-timey, sometimes Appalachian feel. Their music brings together country, blues, folk, and pop rock, lending the group a unique feel that defies definition. Their band includes Ramsey Tietjen, their father, on the lead guitar, and Isaac Puglia on the djembe.
The Red Shoes perform Traditional and Celtic music on fiddle and cello. The Hayward duo features teenaged sisters Lucia and Flavia Purpura-Pontoniere, who were recently, discovered playing a show at the Niles Library on I Street -- they were booked on the spot as special guests in the plaza series.
There are four large shade canopies provided by the Niles Main Street Association. Listeners might consider bringing some shade of their own, along with low lawn chairs, and a picnic. If you cannot pack a picnic, don't worry - several restaurants are adjacent to the plaza and have 'to go' lunches. Please no alcohol, and please keep the plaza clean. This is a family friendly event.
