Union City teen Amihan Agustin's journey to Sacramento last weekend was a bittersweet one: she was representing her hometown, competing in the Junior Olympics in the 3,000 meter run, but unfortunately her hopes for a championship were doused when her calf muscle tensed up during the race.
Agustin had been in second place at one point in the race, but she finished 16th overall with a time of 11:05.
"She was in a lot of pain because of the cramp," said Amihan's mother, Aileen Agustin. "She offered no excuse and actually didn't tell us until that night - her calf muscle had been injured earlier in the week - and fatigue set in."
Amihan, who will begin her freshman year at James Logan High School in the fall, is coached by her father Rudy and Logan High's highly-acclaimed track and field coach Lee Webb.
Aside from her interest in athletics, Amihan is also very community-oriented, as she is involved in outreach service to raise awareness of childhood obesity and diabetes, as well as coaching and exposing local youth to the sport of track and field.
"As disappointing as this [Amihan's injury in the Junior Olympics] is," said Mrs. Agustin, "we were proud because we understood that being nationally ranked spoke volumes for her efforts this year. To make Nationals is no easy feat for anyone."
