Challenge of Liberty summer seminars
Submitted By David J. Theroux
Now more than ever, with the gigantic, current expansion of federal power and spending and the ongoing economic malaise, understanding the economic and moral principles of a free society is of crucial importance. Students are invited to attend the Independent Institute's upcoming 2010 Summer Seminars for Students, which will be held August 9-13 in Oakland.
Aptly named "The Challenge of Liberty," the Summer Seminar is designed to equip college and high-school students with knowledge of the basic principles of free societies and free markets and their application to current events. The course content does not presuppose knowledge of economics, history, or public policy, but instead is designed to teach students proven ways to analyze and understand the issues in which they are most interested, in the world they are about to enter. A variety of formats are used to engage and energize each student, including enjoyable and informative presentations from top-rated lecturers, group discussions, books and course readers, and multimedia.
At the heart of The Independent Institute's "Challenge of Liberty" Summer Seminars is the discussion of the fundamental, recurring myths that lurk beneath the surface of debates over public issues. Here's what students from 2009 had to say about the seminars:
"The Independent Institute Seminar opened up a whole new aspect of the economy and the liberties I have as a citizen that I was never aware of."
"It's a great class and the information gives another perspective which many people don't hear but should."
"This Seminar was so much fun. Each speaker was passionate and enthusiastic about economics and wanted to help students understand and appreciate economics, so that they can make better choices and impact the future."
"If you want to gain a deeper understanding of how markets and liberty work together, you need to check out the Independent Institute's Summer Seminars!"
Expanding minds has always been an integral part of the Independent Institute's mission. If you have any questions about the program, please contact Academic Affairs Director Carl Close at firstname.lastname@example.org, or (510) 632-1366, ext. 117.
The more we can help equip today's young people with a sound understanding of the principles and practices of a strong economy and free society, the less uncertainty we and they will all face for the future!
