New health center to open in Milpitas

By Meenu Gupta

A three-story, 60,000-square-foot health center equipped with 49 exam rooms and three treatment rooms is all set to open for patients on Tuesday, August 3. Santa Clara Valley Health Center Milpitas (VHC) is the new addition to the network of seven primary care health centers operated by Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. "At this time there is not a date for an opening event," said Joy Alexiou, a spokesperson for the Santa Clara Valley Health and Hospital System.

The project costed $56 million, including a three-story, 275-stall parking structure across the street from the health center. "As part of Santa Clara County's public healthcare system, VHC Milpitas is dedicated to the health of the whole community and will cater to the medical needs of Milpitas residents and north San Jose residents," said Alexiou. "The health center will provide excellent, cost-effective and appropriate medical services in a professional setting that meets the needs of patients and clients," she said.

With leadership provided by the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors, VHC Milpitas supplies community-based services in an area that was previously under served. The facility will offer a variety of primary care and support services including pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology, and adult medicine/family practice. An Allergy Clinic, as well as the Pediatric Healthy Lifestyle Center (PHLC), will be relocated to this facility. PHLC works with families to find solutions to issues that cause children to be overweight. Since behavior change is difficult and complex, the patient and family are scheduled for a series of visits to assess the patient's feeding behaviors, physical activity, home environment, and readiness to change. Clinicians and nutritionists work one-on-one and in groups with parents and kids from 9 months to 19 years of age. The focus is on how to maintain health through a healthy lifestyle.

VHC Milpitas will also house a pharmacy, laboratory and radiology. The Public Health Department's Women, Infants and Children Program (WIC) will also have offices in the facility. The health centers hours of operation will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. serving Monday through Friday. The pharmacy will be open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. When asked if the new facility will bring jobs for the residents, Alexiou clarified, that since staff from other locations will be moving to the new site, and because of recent budget reductions, there will not be many job openings. People can, however, go online at the center's website and check under the section "Employment Opportunities."
