Union City National falls in sectionals
By Jeff Weisinger
To put things in a good perspective, the Union City National Minors 10- 11-year-old team ended Danville Little Leagues's 35-inning scoreless streak with a home run by Reggie Bell in the first inning.
However, Danville responded soon after, tying the game in the second inning and putting it away with a six-run third inning as they went on to defeat UCN, 12-2 on Wednesday, July 21, to win the Section 3 tournament.
Danville extends their win streak to eight games, and is now 21-1 throughout the past two seasons.
Danville starter Nick Venenzia pitched a solid three innings, holding the Union City National lineup to just one hit (the home run) while striking out three and walking one during his time on the mound.
Ryan Bowman relieved Venenzia in the fourth and also held the UCN offense to three hits through his two innings while allowing one run and striking out two.
Danville fought back from the early 1-1 tie in the second, taking the lead off Jack Morgan's home run to go up 2-1 after the second inning.
The real damage to UCN came in the third as Danville struck for six runs, highlighted by Morgan's RBI-single, sparking the six-run rally.
Danville also stepped up defensively, forcing a 1-6-3 double play in the fourth with a runner on first and robbing a home run in the sixth.
Union City National finished with just five hits in the game, and scored their second run in the fifth inning.
