Not So Still Life

Sun Gallery is pleased to announce our next exhibit, "Not So Still Life," featuring watercolor works by artist Richard Bolingbroke from August 4 through August 28. Bolingbroke is a watercolor artist of unusual skill; his compositions reveal an artist with a sure sense of formal structure, as well as an exquisite hand. His highly competent use of the watercolor medium, often on a large scale, is based on a brilliance of color and a transparent surface. Bolingbroke's powerful paintings move past decoration to embrace the sensuality of color and form.
In his "Studio Still Life" series, the British-born artist interweaves rich patterns of Japanese kimonos, whispering occult or oblique meanings through a tabletop scenario of vases filled with beautiful flowers. In the next series "Rituals & Meditations," Bolingbroke has turned the tables on tradition by abstracting still life until it becomes a metaphor for questions of life and death. In the most recent work "ART is a four-letter word," he explores the interplay of words and images in an effort to understand the innate tension that exists between these two methods of defining and recording ideas.
A reception is scheduled for Friday, August 13, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Sun Gallery with an Artist Talk at 6 p.m. during which Bolingbroke will enlighten his audience about his art and how it reflects his ideas regarding beauty, love, and life.
