Missing Hayward juvenile Matthew Bonds, reported missing in Hayward on Wednesday, July 21 was found safe in Oakland. At approximately 6:20 a.m. on Thursday, July 22 a Station Agent at the 12th St. BART Station saw Matthew and recognized him from fliers that were sent to all BART Stations. The agent was not able to stop Matthew before he boarded an AC Transit bus, but quickly notified BART Police. BART Police coordinated the location of the bus with AC Transit and took custody of Matthew at 10th and Fallon. Hayward Police will coordinate an intervention with all involved in Matthew's care along with counselors to help prevent further similar incidents, police said.
Hayward Police had been looking for the 14-year-old autistic boy. He arrived at his Special Education classes at 22100 Princeton Street on Wednesday morning and was excused to use the rest room. Matthew took this opportunity to leave the school and was seen by a teacher running away from the grounds. Several school employees attempted and were unable to locate Matthew prompting a request for assistance from the Hayward Police. Through continued investigation, it was discovered that Matthew has run away in this manner several times before, approximately six times in the last two years, including most recently in early June 2010. In one of these incidents, Matthew was gone for three days.
