Driver tasered after fleeing CHP

California Highway Patrol (CHP) Officers used a Taser gun to subdue a driver who ran across lanes of Interstate Highway 880 after a crash in Hayward on Wednesday, July 21. The crash happened at approximately 6:45 a.m. just north of Whipple Road. It involved a blue BMW driven by a Newark resident and a red Ford pick up driven by a Fremont resident. Citizens observed the driver of the reckless vehicle fleeing across the northbound lanes of I-880 into the southbound lanes.
Officers approached the driver who initially avoided and ignored their commands and directions to return to the northbound shoulder of I-880. The driver began to dance in the southbound lanes of I-880, and as officers attempted to take him into custody, he physically resisted. Based on his erratic behavior, unknown mental state, and the safety of all parties involved, Officers took the driver into custody for suspicion of being under the influence of a controlled substance and felony hit and run. Both drivers were taken to local medical facilities for injuries received in the collision.
