FIRST 5 Santa Clara County is proud to announce and welcome Julie Kurtz as the new Chief Deputy Director. Kurtz will be responsible for the overall management of the Program, Communications, Evaluation and Community of Learning Departments.
Julie Kurtz joins the FIRST 5 team following service as Deputy Director and Mental Health Director at Kidango. Kidango is a non-profit child development agency providing quality care and education in nine Bay Area cities to more than 2,500 children daily. During her successful tenure at Kidango, Kurtz founded the Santa Clara Infant Family Early Childhood Mental Health Certificate Program, an intensive 10-month training program leading to endorsement for California State Core Competencies. She also started an early childhood mental health contract in Alameda County providing in-home mental health services to children aged 0-5 and their families.
Kurtz comes to FIRST 5 with 20 years of experience in early childhood and mental health. She is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist operating a part-time private practice in the East Bay.
"Julie Kurtz's impressive reputation in early childhood and mental health makes her an ideal fit for FIRST 5. Her accomplishments are exceptional and she will be a powerful addition towards achieving our vision of ensuring the developmental needs of children pre-natal through age 5 are a priority," said Jolene Smith, Executive Director of FIRST 5 Santa Clara County.
FIRST 5 Santa Clara County is committed to the healthy development of children in their first five years. Research shows a child's brain develops most dramatically in the first five years and what parents and caregivers do during these years to support their child's growth will have a meaningful impact throughout life.
Established in 1998 through funding from California's Proposition 10, the "tobacco tax," FIRST 5 Santa Clara County distributes approximately $20M annually to programs and services that positively impact the lives of children and families in Santa Clara County.
