District 45 all-star update

By Biff Jones

In the second meeting of the year between Union City National and Union City American Senior Little League teams, it was all UCA on Wednesday, July 7. UCN won the first meeting, 4-0, but that was between the UCN Padres and UCA Tigers. This game of the double-elimination tournament was between the Senior All-Stars of the two leagues and UCA had two teams from which to choose and UCN only one.

Top of the first inning saw UCA leadoff hitter Ralph Delgadillo, son of manager Jamie Delgadillo, reach on a single. When he attempted to steal second base, the throw went into the outfield. Delgadillo remained at second until he saw the errant throw get by the center fielder and that was enough to score the first run of the game.

UCN threatened in the bottom of the inning when, with one out, right fielder Anthony Corrales reached on an error by UCA after which first baseman Jesse Rivera was hit by a pitch. However, UCA pitcher Brandon Yau retired the next two UCN batters.

Over the next 4 innings UCA continued to build on its lead with two runs in the second, three in the third and one each in the fourth and fifth innings. Meanwhile Yau was nearly flawless, giving up only two walks and a single over his next four innings. UCN did manage a run out of that as the single and a walk combined with another UCA error plated a run in the fourth.

With an 8-1 lead after five innings, Indy Dhahan was brought in to pitch and Yau stayed in the game at first base. After a third UCA error, a walk, single and another hit batsman plated another UCN run in the sixth, skipper Delgadillo saw enough and brought Yau back into the game and he again retired the next two UCN batters as he had in the first inning.

UCN manager Eli Ramirez III used three pitchers - Ulysses Ramos, Justin Ruybal and Gabriel Aries - over the first six innings and tried Jesse Rivera and Luis Soto in the seventh when UCA scored four more runs. Bottom of the seventh saw Yau hit another batter but that is all UCN would get as this game went to UCA, 12-2.

Leading UCA hitters were shortstop Joe Armstrong, 3-3 with a double and two walks; Delgadillo, double, single and a walk; right fielder Jan Mark Benitez, two singles, a sacrifice fly and hit by a pitch; and third baseman Dimitri Castro, a double and two singles.

For UCN, Arias had two singles; Rivera two walks and hit by a pitch; and Corrales walked and he also reached base twice on UCA errors.

Saturday, July 10 saw UCN eliminate Mt. Eden, 12-2, to force a third meeting with UCA on Tuesday, July 13, at James Logan High School in Union City (home of UCN). If UCN were to win, they would play the winner-take-all game the next evening, Wednesday, July 14, also at Logan.

Both games are scheduled for 5:30 p.m. with the winner advancing to the Section 3 Senior Tournament at Max Baer Park in Livermore starting Saturday, July 17, and running through July 23.

D45 Juniors this week saw UCN play San Lorenzo American on Monday, July 12, (results unavailable at press) with the winner meeting Mt. Eden Little League on Tuesday, July 13, at Castro Valley with the potential winner-take-all game on Wednesday, also at Castro Valley. Both games scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

Majors (11-12) of D45 had MELL take on San Lorenzo American on Monday with the winner taking on San Lorenzo National on Tuesday and the "if necessary" game on Wednesday, both at SLZA at 6 p.m.

Minors (10-11) play for D45 on Monday was SLZA vs. San Leandro with the winner taking on UCN Tuesday, July 13, and "if necessary" on Wednesday with Treeview LL hosting both contests at 6 p.m.
