Mission San Jose Little League's Major All-Stars topped Newark American Little League, 8-4, in their District 14 tournament opener.
The Mission victory was keyed by two home runs, solid defense and fine pitching. MSJLL jumped out front on shortstop Mark Gaffey's first-inning home run. A few batters later, Mudit Mittal ripped an RBI single down the third-base line to put Mission ahead 3-0.
Newark responded with two runs to cut Mission's lead to 3-2, but Mission pulled ahead, 7-2, with two runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth. Leadoff batter Jonathan Lee had two hits while Chris Desiniotis singled and scored twice. Ryland Mortlock added a single and RBI in his final game with the Mission All-Stars before moving out of state.
Stanley Chiang led the offense with three hits and pitched four and two-third strong innings, striking out eight NALL batters. In the fifth inning, Newark's leadoff batter singled sharply off Chiang's head. Chiang stayed in the game and struck out the next two batters before leaving the mound. He then hit a tape-measure home run in the sixth inning, well over the picnic tables beyond the centerfield wall.
Sam Lowrey closed the game on the hill for Mission, striking out three, and added a base hit and two runs batted in.
