By Sanjna Shukla
District 14's Newark American Rangers were crowned the winners of the Minors Tournament of Champions. The Rangers had some close calls in the semifinals but prevailed and eventually beat out the Newark National Brewers 8-0 in the finals.
In the semifinals, the Rangers faced off against the Centerville American. The team had an excellent pitching game as their pitchers, Mike Williams and Alex Scully, combined to strike out 15 batters. Centerville American's pitcher, H. Jordan, also had an impressive game as he struck out 12 batters. Newark American took that game 4-1.
Hard work and good pitching weren't enough for the Newark National Brewers to hold off the Rangers. The starting pitcher of the Brewers, Josh Piccolo, was able to get the first batter out but the Brewers couldn't hold on as the Rangers went up 2-0 at the bottom of the first. Brewers' pitcher Grant Montgomery helped keep the second inning scoreless for the Rangers. Oscar Carlos of the Brewers had a spectacular inning-ending catch to keep the score at 2-0 at the bottom of the second.
In the bottom of the third, Alex Scully of the Rangers hit a triple and by the end of the inning the Rangers were up 4-0. The Rangers got a burst of momentum as they dominated the fourth inning. Joe Scully of the Rangers helped close out the top of the fourth, and by the bottom of the fourth, Rangers went up 8-0. The next couple innings flew by and the final score remained 8-0 as the Rangers shut out the Brewers.
