Theatre Preview: Les Miserables at Ohlone

Submitted By Alicia Jones

StarStruck Theatre crowns its 15th anniversary season with Les Miserables, the eight-time Tony Award-winning musical that has thrilled audiences the world over. It is an ambitious production that StarStruck is eager to deliver for four weekends, July 23-August 14.

"It's important for us to get this production of Les Miz right," said Lori Stokes, founder and artistic director of StarStruck Theatre. "We're playing to a sophisticated audience of frequent theater-goers who loved Les Miz on Broadway; and at the same time, because we are a performing arts organization for youth, we're also playing to young first-timers who will be experiencing this powerful story for the first time. Either way, we want to knock their socks off."

A unique production staged under the stars at Ohlone College Amphitheater in Fremont, Les Miserables is based on Victor Hugo's classic novel about ex-convict Jean Valjean and his attempts to start a new life as police officer Javert, throughout decades of tumult in revolutionary France, relentlessly pursues him. This blockbuster musical showcases a Tony-winning score, including such songs as: "I Dreamed a Dream," "Do You Hear the People Sing," "One Day More," "Master of the House," and "On My Own."

Featuring a cast of more than 50 students under the age of 19 from throughout the southeast Bay Area, this School Edition of Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg's Les Miserables is specially adapted and licensed by Music Theatre International and Cameron Mackintosh.
