Gomes Elementary competes at Odyssey of Mind World Finals

The John Gomes Elementary School team "Agents of Change," comprised of 3rd graders Vinit Majmudar, Janani Sekar, Ashni Mathuria, Larry Shi, Jacob Yeung, Rahul Katwala, and Jade Zhang, competed at the 2010 Odyssey of the Mind World Finals May 26-29. Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan hosted the event.

This young group of creative minds participated for the first time along with 800 other teams-including those from Poland, Germany, China, South Korea, and Mexico-to successfully solve the problem called "Return to the Gift of Flight." The criterion was to build and operate a series of aircraft that would complete a variety of six different flight plans.

The "Agents of Change" team built "Superstressor" flight, with an indirect human powered propulsion system by using compressed air technology to suggest a busy and stressful life. Then they changed the world from a stressful place to a happy and peaceful one with their flight "Future Found," built with a creative propulsion system using recycled material. That led to a series of changes which not only included smiley faces, but also changed winter trees into beautiful flowering trees, and beautified the environment with a bright sunny day, spring flowers, and a colorful rainbow.

Their "Slow Flow" flight, with a mechanical powered propulsion system, revealed that the world is happy and stress free, and spread happiness with their "Touch and Take off Buddy" flight.

The "Agents of Change" team also dropped "Heavenly Healing Hearts" into the creative miniature planet earth, which they created using recycled material. Finally, they celebrated the new, happy world with "Bubbly Party."

The judges smiled and laughed throughout the team's comical presentation of their solution to the problem. The Gomes team scored third place in style category for their creativity.

Congratulations to all team members for their outstanding achievement!
