Ohlone College recognizes Washington Hospital Healthcare System

Submitted By Ana Lopez

Ohlone College has named the Health Sciences Wing of the Ohlone College Newark Center for Washington Hospital Healthcare System in recognition of the Hospital's many contributions to Ohlone students and acknowledging their 30+ year partnership of working together for the good of the community. The announcement was made to members of the Washington Hospital Board Michael Wallace, Pat Danielson, Dr. Bernard Stewart, and Dr. William Nicholson at the 2010 Citizen of the Year Luncheon on Saturday, June 5.

Washington Hospital's commitment to mentoring and developing the next generation of health care workers has resulted in a long and productive partnership with Ohlone. Washington Hospital Healthcare System has assisted Ohlone College in developing educational programs for health care workers and has supplied the college with faculty, curriculum guidance, clinical placements, equipment and supplies for the educational experience for students in the health sciences classes. Over the years, the Hospital has awarded the College over $2 million to increase its educational efforts in providing health care workers for the future.

Another significant contribution by the Hospital to Ohlone students was the Ohlone College Student Health Center, which opened in 1996. The Hospital provided startup money, support for the services offered and has collaborated with staff at the College to continually maintain and improve the services provided at the center. Since its opening, the health center has provided primary care services for over 50,000 students and related services such as personal counseling, life coaching, first aid, health education, and blood drives to an additional 170,000 Ohlone students.

Washington Hospital, the 2010 Citizen of the Year, has been an active contributor to this community since 1958 when it first opened its doors. In addition the Hospital has focused on increasing local residents' health awareness and disease prevention in the community. Its vision for the future included nurturing future health care professionals to provide quality care by working with Ohlone College.

The Ohlone College Foundation Citizen of the Year Luncheon is an annual tradition that dates back to 1987. Proceeds from the event are awarded as scholarships to students attending Ohlone.
