Fremont Chess Tournament a success
By Jeff Weisinger
Back on May 15-16, the Fremont Chess Club held the annual Hans Poschmann Chess tournament at the Fremont Adult School.
Players from all over Northern California participated in the weekend long tournament, in which contestants won prizes totaling $1,400.
Arjoe Loanzon and Ricardo DeGuzman both tied for first place in the open division of the tournament, while Yuan Wang took first place in the A/B division. Delgerbileg Erdenebaatar took first in the reserves, upsetting higher rated player Jerry Wu and pulling a draw with Alexander Magganas.
Hans Poschmann ran the Fremont Chess Club for nearly 40 years, from 1967 until 2006. He published newsletters originally from a manual typewriter, then adapted to desktop publishing once personal computers arrived. He organized numerous events for both children and adults, setting the stage for organizers in Fremont to start up after-school chess programs and weekend tournaments.
The club's next tournament will be at Club Sport on the weekend of July 31-August 1.
