By Biff Jones
California District 14 little leagues (Fremont and Newark) are getting ready for Tournament of Champions play, Sunday, June 20, through Saturday, June 26. This will be followed by All-Star play which leads to the Little League World Series in four divisions - Majors, Juniors, Seniors and Big League.
TOC pits the regular season champions of each D14 league against each other in four divisions - Minors, Majors, Juniors and Seniors - in a single-elimination format. D14 has eight little leagues: Centerville American, Centerville National, Fremont American, Mission San Jose, Newark American, Newark National, Niles-Centerville and Warm Springs.
All games are scheduled to be played on a neutral field. Minors and Seniors will play Sunday, Tuesday, June 22, and Thursday, June 24; Majors play Monday, June 21, Wednesday, June 23, and Friday, June 25; and Juniors take the field on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Sunday games start at 2 p.m.; Monday through Friday games at 5:30 p.m.; and Saturday's game at 10 a.m.
In NA Minors action last week, the Athletics defeated the Orioles, 6-4, and Rangers won over the Twins, 11-1. The two winners then met on Thursday, June 10, with the Athletics winning, 6-2. Since the Rangers were regular season champs, they had to be defeated twice. On Friday, the Rangers prevailed 13-3.
Noah Koep pitched three strong innings, giving up just one hit in the Rangers win over the Twins. Everyone on the Rangers got on base at least once with Cyrus Amboy and Jose Nino both scoring twice. Dylan Prasad got his biggest hit ever, a double to the fence.
In NA Majors play, the Angels defeated the Red Sox, 8-3, on Monday, June 7, but followed that by losing to the Red Sox, 9-2 on Thursday, June 10.
NN Minors had the Cardinals winning 16-9 over the Giants on Tuesday, June 8, followed up on Thursday, June 10, with the Brewers winning the post season, 8-7, over the Cardinals.
