Submitted By Lt. Gloria Lopez-Vaughan
A 17 year old Union City resident was shot on Saturday, June 5 at approximately 2:16 a.m at the 1500 block of Decoto Road. The Victim's vehicle had collided with a light pole on Decoto Road near 11th Street. Officers responded to that location and located the vehicle. Union City police officers assisted the driver to escape from the burning vehicle which became fully engulfed after the officers had safely removed the driver. The driver, who was the only occupant inside the vehicle, had suffered major facial injuries which did not appear to be life threatening. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Investigating officers discovered the vehicle had been struck by at least one bullet. The driver's injuries appeared to have been caused by the collision; he had not been struck by gun fire.
Witnesses reported seeing a light colored vehicle driving on Decoto Road just prior to the shooting and reported that at least one occupant had been shooting from the suspect vehicle. The vehicle fled prior to police arrival and has not been located. There is no known motive at this time.
