Rangers top Newark American Minors
Submitted By Tony Koep
2010 Newark American Rangers Minor Little League team have finished the regular season with a 20-1 record and the top seed going into the playoffs.
Rangers may not intimidate anyone with their size, but their focus and effort have been second to none with great defensive plays coming from every position on the field.
Rangers have had production from the whole lineup and have outscored their opponents 265-56 while combining for five no hitters.
On the season the team has had a .679 on base percentage led by Alex Scully and Cyrus Amboy, both of whom are over .800.
Batting average for the Rangers is well over .450 and has had solid hitting performances by Scully (.695, 6 HR), Mike Willams (.636), Noah Koep (.567) and 8-year-old Amboy (.526). Amboy (42) and Scully (37) lead the team in runs scored.
This team has had outstanding pitching the whole season from all six of its main pitchers. Koep leads the team with 10 wins; Scully has pitched 29 innings and given up only 14 hits while striking out 63; and Willams, with nine wins, has pitched 20 innings yielding only four hits and striking out 52.
Amboy and Marcus Galvez have also made big contributions to the pitching staff. When Galvez is not pitching, he is behind the plate handling the pitching staff brilliantly and gunning down all would-be base stealers. This has truly been a team effort by all with lots of kids doing whatever it takes to get the job done.
Rangers next play on Saturday, June 5, at Newark Jr. High School in the Newark American Minor Division playoffs. First pitch is at noon. If the Rangers win they will play again on Tuesday, June 8, 5:30 p.m. at NJHS.
Since the Rangers are the no.-1 seed they will have to be beaten twice. If they lose either Saturday or Tuesday, then they will play Thursday, June 10, for the post season championship.
