Letter to the editor: Our community needs help
We are among the richest nations on earth and yet we have 10% unemployment and, more troubling, almost 50-million Americans are going hungry. At Tri-City Volunteers, our local food bank and thrift store, we are filling bags with food to satisfy this rising tide of need. Two years ago we were handing out 4,000 food bags of food a month. Each bag was valued at $20. That was $80,000 a month for food and we had to work hard to raise that kind of money.
Fast forward to May 2010. This month we will hand out more than 12,000 food bags! That's $240,000 in food items each month. This represents a 3-fold increase over two years ago and we have worked even harder to assure that those in need get fed... so far.
But each month these past two years Tri-City Volunteers has had to drain our rainy-day reserves. And to extend this metaphor, it's still raining hard. Even with the generosity of our food partnerships that supply us with free food, this source, too, is disappearing. For example, some food donors are struggling to remain profitable and are reducing the price of day-old bread rather than donating it to us. Now, frankly, Tri-City Volunteers is being squeezed on two sides; both food and monetary donations are down.
It's not too hard to imagine our communities unraveling, if we cannot feed the hungry. Tri-City Volunteers is on duty every day trying to prevent this from happening. Each and every one of us who work here cares about the people who come to us in need. We are doing everything we can.
Now we need help, too. Would you please help us by making a monetary donation? We also accept food and household items that we sell in our thrift store to raise money. Please join us in alleviating hunger in our community? People turn to us when they need help. Now, we are turning to you, our community, asking for your generosity to help us continue this important work. Shoulder to shoulder we can make a difference.
