"Beauty, Thy Name is Night"
The Sun Gallery, Hayward Area Forum of the Arts presents a unique exhibit installation by Benny Alba. The show is in an all black, walled room with quotes regarding night by famous writers white chalked on the walls. Flashlights and or twinkle lights are used to view the room. Viewers will slowly take a thorough look at the beauty of night while reading Hawthorne, LaoTsu, Van Gogh, and others.
Artist Alba says, "A journey to a new place can take days. The return is but minutes long. A long path becomes familiar and beloved as travelers pass along it. Artists forge fresh paths for travelers. We create new ways to see ancient topics. At times we wander, exploring without intention. Other times we choose topics or rather, they choose us."
"Night, with its deep velvet silence, can engender rapture as surely as the morning rays of light do. Opportunity to see and hear true quiet night is seldom offered in today's electric time of noise and illumination. It is my intention to hew paths into territories to bring a new or renewed understanding of Earth's natural aspects. Mysterious night is often perceived as ugly as we separate our lives from our earlier understanding of natural life with wonderful electricity and well lit, late night life. Once available to rich and poor, it's a rare moment in life to see and get to know night. Perhaps one of the functions of art is to encourage humans to stop and look closely at wonders."
"Every work that I create has a challenge to myself in it. The challenge may be the size of the art, the materials used, the colors and their combinations, the shapes, the symbols and/or the message that I intend to convey."
This is a free exhibit that opens May 26 through June 19 in the Ken Cook Gallery room.
