Two arrested for double homicide in Hayward

Submitted By Sergeant Steve Brown, Hayward PD

A 17-year-old Fremont girl and a 21-year-old male are in police custody in connection to the shooting deaths of two 18-year old men. On Sunday, May 9 at approximately 1:07 a.m., the Hayward Police Department Communications Bureau received several 9-1-1 emergency calls of "shots fired" in the area of 21600 Westpark Street. Hayward PD dispatchers received calls from residents in the area of Memorial Way, "A" Street and Westpark Street. While emergency personnel were enroute, there was an updated emergency call stating that a subject was down and lying near a vehicle parked on Westpark Street yelling for help.

Officers medical emergency personnel arriving three minutes later discovered that an 18 year-old male, lying in the street next to the vehicle, had been shot multiple times; he was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene. Officers also found another 18 year-old male down on the sidewalk on the passenger's side of the vehicle. This male who also had been shot numerous times, was initially talking to investigating officers. This male was transported to Eden Hospital in Castro Valley where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The names of these males are currently being withheld pending notifications of next of kin; however both males were reportedly residing in Hayward.

Responding Officers followed a vehicle leaving the area of the shooting at a high rate of speed. Officers tried to initiate an investigative stop on the vehicle, however, the vehicle failed to yield and a pursuit of the vehicle ensued. This vehicle drove northbound onto I-880 from "A" Street and drove into Oakland with Hayward officers pursuing. The vehicle took the eastbound Hegenberger Road exit and began to drive recklessly on the wrong side of the roadway. Officers lost the vehicle on surface streets in the area.

The vehicle was eventually located by Oakland PD officers ten minutes later in the 6500 block of Fenham Street, Oakland, unoccupied. A 17-year-old female and a 21-year-old male were seen walking away from the area and fled on foot upon contact by Oakland PD officers. A perimeter was established by Oakland PD officers and they were subsequently assisted by law enforcement officers from the Alameda County Sheriff's Office and Hayward PD.

At approximately 2:15 am. the 17 year-old female was found hiding in the area of the Fruitvale Business Center located at 901-999 66th Avenue. This female was detained and was later positively identified by witnesses as being at the scene of the homicide. The vehicle that was located was also positively identified by witnesses as being at the scene of the homicide. This female, a Fremont resident, was arrested for investigation of homicide and eventually transported to Juvenile Hall via Hayward PD.

At 7:22 a.m. the extensive search yielded the male hiding in the backyard of a residence in the 6200 block of Tevis Street in Oakland. This male was hiding in a van parked in a backyard and he was non-compliant to officer's demands to exit the van. A police K-9 had to be sent into the van where the suspect resisted and was bitten by the police K-9 before being taken into custody. This male, an Oakland resident, was identified as an occupant of the vehicle that was being pursued and he was arrested for investigation of homicide. Two search warrants were served at residences associated with the suspects in the cities of Fremont and Oakland.

The motive for the homicides is unknown at this time and any speculation at this time would be premature. The investigation is continuing with investigators questioning additional witnesses and evaluating evidence that has been gathered. Citizens with further information about this crime are asked to call the Hayward Police Department Investigations Bureau at (510) 293-7034. This is Hayward's 8th and 9th homicide of 2010.
