Swing into Spring
By Alissa Gwynn
Get ready to shag, swing, and dip! The Safe and Sober Grad Night Committee at John F. Kennedy High School (JFK) is putting on a West Coast Swing Dance fundraiser to help make Grad Night a success for the graduating class of 2010. "Swing into Spring," which will be held on Friday, May 14 in JFK's new cafeteria, will, without a doubt, be three hours of fun for people of all ages.
For those of you with two left feet, have no fear! Professional dance instructor Mike Quebec will be teaching a one-hour swing dance lesson prior to the dance for an additional $2.50. Quebec has taught classes at various dance studios in the area, including the Silliman Center, Fremont Adult School, and Cal State East Bay.
West Coast Swing originated in the United States, and is the energetic dancing you see in the teen movies of the 50s. Although it is not as prevalent in the U.S. as it once was, popular television shows like So You Think You Can Dance have brought "West Coast Swing" back into Americans' vocabulary.
Although many generous financial backers, including Bob Wieckowski, Ivy Wu, the Fremont Police Association, Dale Hardware, Fremont Bank, and more have donated to Grad Night, the committee still needs to raise an additional $10,000 to put on a safe, substance-free Grad night complete with unlimited food and drink, Segway racing, a hypnotist, and rock climbing. Attending the dance is a win-win situation; the Grad Night Committee will receive the funding they need and participants will have a terrific Friday Night.
Tickets are available in advance by contacting Gail Fiock (510) 651-1630, or Cindy Uliana (510) 862-4069, or they can be purchased at the door.
