Chabot baseball on to Super Regional

By Gary van den Heuvel

Chabot College's baseball team pulled off a Lazarus-like return from the dead in their 2-1 series victory over Skyline College in the first round of the California Community College Athletic Association North Regional playoffs on Friday and Saturday, May 7-8.

The Gladiators faced a 1-0 deficit after losing on Friday, 12-7, and were down to their last out on Saturday when they came to life with three runs to beat the visiting Trojans, 5-4.

Skyline jumped on Chabot starting pitcher Brandon Plotz with a three-run first inning, and after four innings, they led 4-0. Chabot cut into the lead with two runs in the fifth, and went scoreless until their ninth-inning rally.

Miguel Flores went 4-5 with three RBIs and a run. Winning pitcher Mike Botelho (who came into the game in relief in the fourth inning) pitched six scoreless innings, giving up four hits and striking out five batters. Kyle Gallegos was 2-4, scoring two runs and driving in one.

In the series' rubber match, which took place on the same day, the Gladiators didn't need to sweat out the result as they had in Game 2. The Trojans took a 1-0 first-inning lead, but Chipper Lemmo tied the game in the bottom of the inning with a solo dinger. The Gladiators added a run in the third when Nick Bartolone singled, stole second base, advanced to third by tagging up on a fly ball, and scored when the Skyline pitcher balked.

Skyline tied the game with a single run in the fifth on a Sean Rogers homerun, but Chabot answered in their half of the inning with three. Bartolone scored again, this time on a single by Gallegos, and with two outs, Lemmo and Gallegos both scored on an infield single by Flores. Chabot salted the game away with a seventh-inning homer by Drew Helenihi for a final score of 6-2.

Alex Jack pitched a remarkable game, allowing only 2 hits and striking out six in a complete-game win, improving his record to 6-1.

The fourth-seeded Gladiators will next face fifth-seeded Fresno, who beat West Valley, in the second-round Super Regional the weekend of Friday, May 14, through Sunday, May 16.
