18 County elementary schools receive "Distinguished School" award
Submitted By Claudia Medina
Alameda County recognized as "California Distinguished Schools" by the California Department of Education (CDE). The honor is granted to applicant schools that have implemented signature practices to increase student achievement overall and narrow the achievement gap between higher-performing and lower-performing students.
"During trying times for schools, it is especially noteworthy and important to honor schools that continue to model success despite budget cutbacks," said Superintendent Jordan. "These schools demonstrate that high academic achievement is within the reach of all of our students. I commend the dedication of staff, students, and parents for their focus and hard work, and encourage all schools to adopt new innovative practices to replicate their success."
California Distinguished Schools were selected for their outstanding success to improve student achievement (measured by their Academic Performance Index and Adequate Yearly Progress results) utilizing two signature practices. A comprehensive application is submitted with details on the school's signature approach and is validated by a site visit from a team of educators. Award recipients agree to share their signature practices with other schools and to serve as mentors to educators who want to emulate the work.
Schools selected for recognition will be honored during the California Distinguished Schools awards ceremony and dinner at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim on June 4, 2010.
