Cabaret comes to Fremont

Submitted By Alicia Jones

Washington High School's Theater Department is pleased to announce its spring musical production of Cabaret, a landmark musical. Prepare to be transported back to a seedy 1930s Berlin nightclub, the Kit Kat Klub, with music and lyrics by Kander and Ebb and a touch of Bob Fosse's direction.

Willkommen. Bienvenue... Welcome to Washington High School cafeteria May 14-29 for a night of Cabaret!

Cabaret follows the story of Cliff Bradshaw (Max Lerch), a young American writer looking for inspiration in the thrilling decadence that Berlin is supposed to offer. Into his life comes Sally Bowles (Lindsay McCargar), a middle-class girl from Chelsea, London, working as a singer at Berlin's Kit-Kat Klub as the specter of Nazi Germany takes shape. Sally soon moves in with Cliff, living in a boarding house run by Fraulein Schneider (Kimberly Chatterjee). Fellow lodgers include Fraulein Kost (Kim Dutrow), and the gentle, graying fruiterer Herr Schultz (Mario Rappa).

The Cabaret's most famous character, known as "the Emcee" (Josh "Ho-Jon" Del Mundo) assures them that, whatever their troubles, they will forget them at the Cabaret. His songs provide wry commentary throughout the show as history is made and the Nazi Party rises to power. This performance is full of classic songs and dance numbers that have formed the foundation of what we call theater today. Musical numbers include "It Couldn't Please Me More," "Willkommen," "Cabaret, Don't Tell Mama" and "Two Ladies" to name a few.

The musical will showcase 21 actors/dancers/chorus. Kimberly Chatterjee, Lindsay McCarger, Kim Dutrow, Lorenzo Dominguez, Alyssa Martell and Brittany Martinek give their final performances at Washington as graduating seniors. This show is under the direction of Mathew Ballin. Music Director Emily Khuc and fellow pianist Daniel Fung lead the student orchestra, and costume designs for the show are created by Juliana Danner-Vera along with the Washington High School Fashion Club.
