Crowning of Hayward Idol

By Julie Grabowski

In the shower, the car, bellowing into a hairbrush or a karaoke mike, whether alone or with rowdy friends or strangers, most everyone is guilty of playing the rock star. While this role typically remains in a dream world, Hayward Area Recreation and Park District has been turning fantasy into reality with their annual Hayward Idol competitions.

Now in its fifth year the contest is open to ages 13-18 and serves as a fun showcase for young talent. "We wanted to give youth an opportunity to experience something similar to American Idol," says Recreation Specialist IV Vicente Zuniga who works in youth and teen activities and coordinates the event. "It gives teenagers an opportunity to gain confidence and self-esteem while performing in a theatre in front of a great crowd."

Open auditions were held March 6, 9, 13, and 16 at Hayward's Douglas Morrisson Theatre where 31 participants performed one a cappella song to earn a spot in the finals. Local vocal instructors and music educators took on judging duties, critiquing singers on technical ability, presentation, and overall impression.

On Saturday, April 17 at 7 p.m. the top ten finalists return to the Douglas Morrison stage, each singing two songs complete with full sound, lights, and an audience to cheer them on. The evening's judge panel includes Bay Area artist Connie Gaxiola, Starla Walker from Hayward Music Center, and local choir singer Laura Stull. The top three finalists will be awarded MP3 players and gift cards, and one will also capture the title of Fifth Annual Hayward Idol Champion.

The community is invited to come out and enjoy a fun show at a wonderful local venue, and discover and support our talented youth. Hometown stars of today could be shining on the stages of the world tomorrow.

Tickets for the finals cost $10 and may be purchased at the theatre box office (open Tuesday-Friday from 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.), by calling (510) 881-6777, or by emailing requests to theatre@haywardrec.org. For further information about Hayward Idol call (510) 888-0211.
