April 14, 2010 > Theatre Preview: Ultima: An original play Theatre Preview: Ultima: An original play "Ultima," is an original play by Rachel LePell, inspired by the book, "Bless Me Ultima," by Rudolfo Anaya. This book tells the story of a young boy, Antonio M‡rez, and a "curandera" (folk healer) who comes to live with his family. The curandera battles an evil foe and Antonio confronts his own choices as he grows up. The book was chosen for this year's The Big Read, a program emanating from the Hayward Public Library, and reaching many communities in the East Bay, including Oakland, San Leandro, Hayward, and Fremont.
