Theatre and stage makeup workshops

Curtain Call Performing Arts launches its performing arts education with special Theatre and Stage Makeup Workshops on Saturday, April 3. Offering beginner, intermediate, and advanced courses taught by professional makeup artist and San Leandro native, Kendra Johnson (Bancroft and SLHS Alum), performers will learn makeup techniques at a fraction of the industry standard cost.

In 2009, Kendra returned to her alma mater, Bancroft Musical Theatre (where she "officially" got her start in theater) to design and apply the Grinch makeup for "Seussical the Musical," and designed both the makeup and prosthetics for Curtain Call's performance of "A Christmas Carol."

The Beginning Course at 10 a.m. ($25.00) is a "crash course" in basic and corrective stage makeup application for students who have never applied stage makeup, or need a refresher in basic application. Students will learn the fundamental differences between stage and street makeup and materials, the importance of stage makeup, shadow and light and how each affects the shape of the face, color theory, blending and the use of a variety of tools, and maintaining proper hygiene and care for makeup, tools and person. This course is a prerequisite for the Intermediate and Advanced Courses.

The Intermediate Course at 12:30 p.m. ($30.00) is for students who know basic stage makeup application and would like to learn character makeup, with a focus on old age. Students will learn facial shapes and structure, blending and the use of a variety of tools, "tricks of the trade," and maintaining proper hygiene and care for makeup, tools, and person.

The Advanced Course at 3 p.m. ($50.00) is for students well versed in stage makeup, or has taken one of the above courses. Students will learn generic prosthetic application and proper removal, edge blending, "tricks of the trade," fundamental differences in prosthetic materials and the pros and cons of each, and makeup application on different prosthetic materials.

Courses are available through online registration only at www.curtaincallperformingarts.net. A material fee will be needed, payable on the day of the course.
