Newark falls in CIF championship
By Giovanni Albanese Jr.
At the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) boys basketball division one state championship, it was all about execution, and Newark Memorial High School didn't have enough of it to match up with the No. 9 team in the nation (according to the USA Today) Westchester High School.
Westchester got Cougars star forward Khion Sankey in foul trouble early, and the Comets were able to race out to an early lead which they would never relinquish, en route to a 63-56 win to claim the championship.
Despite having to come out of the game for most of the first half with foul trouble, Sankey was able to get his team back into the game with his team-high 25 points and 10 rebounds. Also contributing to the cause was Kendell Andrews, scoring 12 points and pulling down 10 boards of his own.
Newark finished the season at 30-5, and will have to rebound from the loss with a fresh start in November, at the start of the 2010-11 season. |
