Firefighters contain house fire
Submitted By Capt. Thor Poulsen, Public Education Officer, Hayward FD
Hayward Firefighters responded to a house fire at 3522 Bridle Drive, Hayward, at 9:44 p.m. on Thursday, March 25. On arrival, firefighters found a mother and young child outside the property, having escaped safely, and that the kitchen was alight with fire showing from the roof.
The fire was contained to the kitchen and where it was quickly extinguished as the fire continued outside around a flu vent pipe. Smoke detectors in the home were still sounding as crews on the roof cut a ventilation hole through a metal roof that had been placed over an older wood-shake roof.
"The shake roof under the metal roof was on fire and had began to move laterally," stated Battalion Chief George Silva. "Labor-intensive work from the truck crew to pull off the metal roof prevented this fire from spreading to more of the wood shake and engulfing the roof," Silva said.
Smoke damage was evident throughout the home. The cause is currently under investigation. There were no injuries reported.
