Wanda Olinger will be honored for all her hard work and valuable contribution to the Milpitas community at the 36th annual Awards Banquet sponsored by the Knights of Columbus Council 5796. An active member of the Milpitas Rotary club since 1987, Olinger is currently representing Rotary as Chair of the Milpitas High School and Calaveras Hills High School Interact Clubs.
For Olinger the first glimpse of Milpitas was when she traveled to a small town of 3,500 residents in 1954 with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Nelson. She remembers at that time there was only one elementary school and no high school. When her family moved to Milpitas, Olinger attended the first classes at Samuel Ayer High School. She was the first editor of the Trojan year book and president of the Future Business Leaders of America. These events served as the rudiments of her dedication and interest in the Milpitas community.
While raising her sons, Brian and Wayne, she became a real estate agent specializing in the Milpitas and Berryessa areas. When she married her husband Bob Olinger, they formed a partnership in a real estate company in Milpitas on Main Street.
She has been directly involved with student mentoring programs helping 160+ students in the High Schools Interact Club take an interest in the Milpitas Community. A vital link in many of their volunteer efforts, Olinger attends their weekly meetings and assists students prepare paperwork for field trips and the Rotary Speech Contest. With her students, she has been actively involved in many projects such as sorting and bagging food goods during the Thanksgiving and Christmas season at the Milpitas Food Pantry, Rotary Fishing Day and the Pumpkin Patch sale contest each year. Wanda's commitment to the youth of our community makes her an outstanding citizen of Milpitas. An active member of the Lions Club and the Milpitas Historical Society, Olinger is Past President of the Milpitas Chamber of Commerce and has served on the Executive Board several times.
The Knights of Columbus will also recognize other nominees for Citizen of the Year: Preeti Suri, Carmen Montano, Anil Godhwani and William Leffler.
