Man arrested for murder in shaken baby case
Submitted By Sergeant J.D. Nelson
On Thursday, March 4 at about 8 a.m., Alameda County Sheriff's deputies responded to Kaiser Hospital in Santa Clara for a report of a four-month old baby in critical condition and in a coma. The baby had been transferred from Kaiser Hospital in Hayward where doctors believed the baby may have been severely shaken which caused her traumatic brain injuries. The baby had been brought to the hospital by family members. The injuries occurred in the 21000 block of Gribben Avenue in Unincorporated Hayward.
Sheriff's Youth and Family Services investigators spoke to family members and through that process ultimately arrested the baby's father, Jose Arevalo, on child abuse charges. He was taken to Santa Rita Jail in Dublin. On Friday, March 5, doctors notified sheriff's investigators the baby's injuries had taken a turn for the worse and by Saturday she was declared brain dead by doctors at Kaiser. Arevalo's charges were then amended, and he was charged for her murder.
This is the second murder of the year investigated by sheriff's deputies. Anyone with any additional information is urged to call: Detective Jason Hawks at (510) 667-3645; Detective Raymond Kelly at (510) 667-3657; Alameda County Sheriff's Office 24 hour dispatch number at (510) 667-7721 or Sergeant J.D. Nelson at (510) 272-6901.
