Basketball season for the community colleges continues for two of the four local teams, as the Ohlone men and Chabot women won their North Regional final round games to advance to the California Community College Athletic Association State Championships. Chabot men and Ohlone women saw their seasons come to an end in their post-season losses.

Ohlone men, ranked number 1 in the state, advanced to the state championships for the second-consecutive season with its 75-65 win over the eighth-seeded Yuba 49ers on Ohlone's home floor. The Renegades won the game partly on the strength of a 12-0 run in the second half to break a 44-44 tie.

Reggie Jones led Ohlone with 25 points; Lavon Gray scored 15 and pulled down 12 rebounds; and Ronnie Sawyer had 14 points.

Charnay Bell led the Chabot women's team with 30 points in the Gladiators' 77-71 overtime win over Sierra-Rocklin. Chabot had squandered a 14-point, second-half lead, at one point trailing by four points with under six minutes remaining, before going on a run to reclaim the lead - a lead they again relinquished when Sierra rallied in the final minutes.

Monica Garcia (18 points) and Stephanie Amaral (14) both scored in double digits for Chabot (17-11).

Coast Conference North women's champions Ohlone had to come from behind for nearly the whole game against City College of San Francisco, but despite its valiant comeback - fighting back from a 16-point, second-half deficit - CCSF won the contest, 74-63.

After Ohlone tied the game in the second half, the Renegades ran out of gas, as the home team Rams went on 12-0 run. Ganeaya Rogers led Ohlone with 24 points; Crystal Mclaughlin scored 16; and Jasmine Rubin had 10 points.

The Chabot men's season ended with its 83-68 loss to City College of San Francisco. The Gladiators suffered from subpar shooting (37 percent from the floor) as well as being out-rebounded, 49-35, by the Rams. Derrick Bruce led Chabot with 28 points.

The state championship for the men takes place on Friday, March 12, through Sunday, March 14, at Cal Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks. Ohlone, as the top seed from the North, takes on the South's fourth seed, Saddleback, at 3 p.m. in the opening round on Thursday. Meanwhile, the women's state championship begins on Thursday, March 11, and runs through Sunday, March 14, also at Cal Lutheran. Chabot's Lady Gladiators, as the North's fourth seed, takes on the South's top seed, Fullerton.
