Firefighters Charlie Verhoeven and Ernie Morua were recently promoted to Fire Captain.
Charlie Verhoeven joined the Newark Fire Department as a Firefighter in 1999. He was born and raised in Southern California before moving to the Bay Area. Charlie attended UC Santa Barbara where he double-majored in geography and environmental studies. For the last eight years, Charlie has coordinated the Fourth of July Pancake Breakfast, a community event that benefits the Muscular Dystrophy Association. He also coordinates the Annual Toy Drive during the holidays which benefits many children in the community. In 2006 Charlie was selected by his peers as Newark's Firefighter of the Year.
Ernie Morua joined the City of Newark Fire Department as a Firefighter in 1987 and became a Hazardous Materials Specialist in 1993. Since the beginning of the program, he demonstrated a high degree of dedication by performing his fire services duties, such as being the Department's Personal Protective Training Officer, a go-to trainer for the new recruits and senior personnel and a CERT Instructor. In October 2009, he was selected by his peers as the city's Firefighter of the Year.
