Due to budget reductions street debris removal and street sweeping will be scaled back. Newark city streets which used to be swept monthly on the old schedule will now be swept on a bi-monthly basis. Effective February 2010 following is the revised street sweeping schedule. On even months (Feb., Apr., June, Aug, Oct. and Dec.) Area 2 (First Tuesday); Area 4 (Second Tuesday); Area 6 (Third Monday); Area 8 (Third Tuesday); Area 10 (Second Monday) and Area 12 (Second Monday) will be swept.

On odd months (Mar., May, July, Sept. and Nov.) Area 1 (First Tuesday); Area 3 (Second Tuesday); Area 5 (Third Monday); Area 7 (Third Tuesday); Area 9 (Fourth Monday); Area 11 (First Monday) and Area 13 (Second Monday) will be swept.

Newark residents may help by moving any vehicles parked on the street according to their area's sweeping schedule. Vehicles parked on the street prevent the sweeper from performing the sweeping effectively. Moving basketball hoops into driveways, placing the garbage cans behind the curb on pick-up day are some of the other ways in which residents may help.

"Do not rake, pile, or blow debris, leaves, or tree branches into the street or the storm drain. Place leaves and yard trimmings in your green waste containers," said Maintenance Supervisor, City of Newark Sue Carey, Please do not rake, pile, or blow debris, leaves, or tree branches into the street or the storm drain.

Placing leaves and yard trimmings in your green waste containers will prevent leaves and debris from clogging storm drains, which can lead to flooding and from flowing into the Bay where it contributes to water pollution.

"The new schedule will continue indefinitely," said Carey. For additional information call (510) 578-4806 or visit www.newark.org.
