Renegades tame Sac City in doubleheader
By Jeff Weisinger
After losing two of its last three games going into Saturday's (Feb. 20) doubleheader, the Ohlone baseball team took on the Sacramento City College Panthers and dropped 26 runs in the two games, winning 9-5 in game one, and 17-2 in the second game.
"We had two really solid days of practice," said Renegades coach Jordon Twohig.
Ohlone saw a lack of run production since outscoring its first two opponents (Diablo Valley College and Santa Rosa) by a combined 22-2, scoring only 14 runs in the next three games combined, two of which were losses.
In game one, the Renegades took an early 3-0 lead, highlighted by Jeff Johnson's first-inning, two-run home run, however the Panthers came back in the fourth, scoring five runs against Ohlone starter Matt Fontaine (1-1), who allowed five runs on six hits in the top of the fourth.
Down, but not out, Ohlone began to claw back in the bottom of the fourth off Michael Briseno's home run to left to cut the deficit to 5-4. Then an inning later, Chris Weeber put the Renegades up for good with his three-run homer, giving Ohlone the go-ahead 7-5 lead. Ohlone would tack on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the 9-5 win.
In game two, starter Roberto Padilla (3-0) got a huge hand from his lineup in the bottom of the third inning.
With Ohlone already up 1-0 off Michael Ussery's RBI double down the left field line in the bottom of the second, the Renegades took charge in the bottom of the third, scoring 12 runs on 10 hits along with three Sac City errors (two of which were on Panthers' third baseman Mike Correa). It took three Sac City pitchers to take down 16 Ohlone batters.
The Renegades tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth and sixth inning to go up 17-2. The Panthers scored twice off Padilla in the top of the fifth off a two-RBI single by Trent Fuller.
Ohlone traveled to the College of San Mateo to take on the Bulldogs on Tuesday, Feb. 23 (results were unavailable at press).
Chabot 10, Fresno City 2
The Chabot College baseball team continued its hot start, improving to 6-1 on the season after defeating Fresno City College 10-2 on Saturday, Feb. 20.
The Gladiators struck first out of the gate, scoring three runs in the top of the first off Fresno City starter Paul Anaya. Chabot would take a commanding 10-1 lead after the third inning, highlighted by Jake Whitney's three-run homerun.
Chabot would strike again, this time for six runs in the third inning. Steven Carroll's three-RBI double sparked the offensive explosion for the Gladiators. Chabot scored six runs on just two hits with two Fresno City errors in that top of the third.
Chabot traveled to Cosumnes River on Tuesday, Feb. 23, looking to improve to 7-1 (results were unavailable at press).
