Just what is a "Penny War?" For one school week, February 1 - 5, students, parents and faculty of Weibel Elementary found out.

This strategy contest had a psychological perspective. Each classroom was assigned a one-gallon plastic milk jug with their classroom number, teacher and grade written on it. Twenty-eight jugs were lined up on stage in the multi-use room (MUR); students had open access to the jugs throughout the school day. The object of the game was to place pennies in opponents (other classes') jugs. To offset points in your own classroom's jug, students added silver coins (non-pennies) and dollars. The winner was determined by a negative number rather than a positive. Sounds confusing? Well, it is, until you get the hang of it and that is where strategy comes into play.

Each day a winner was announced; (the jug with the most silver coins and dollars). Students took aim at the leading class and bombarded them with pennies, while keeping their own jug totals of pennies low by the addition of silver coins and dollars.

Kindergarten even had their own donation box, with proceeds added to those of the other classes.

After a fierce five day competition, the winner was determined to be the 6th grade class of Mrs. Powell. They had a total of minus 208,319 points.

All week long the kids were laughing, strategizing and having a great time while helping Haitian Earthquake victims. Many children used their own allowance money for the competition. It was truly wonderful to see them giving back and coming together with such strong "Wildcat" school spirit.

By Friday night all the money had been counted and a grand total of $2,190 had been raised!
A check will be presented to Operation USA to assist with Haiti relief efforts.

A pizza party, sponsored by Z Pizza, will be held for the winning class; all food is donated by the eatery.

A box for checks is still set up in the Front Office of Weibel School for anyone who would like to donate to this effort, until the end of the school year. Please make checks payable to Operation USA.

So, now it is your school's turn to have a "Penny War" fund-raising event! Doesn't it sound like fun?
