February 10 saw the grand opening of the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System's new 10,000 sq. ft. facility on Liberty Street, Fremont. The clinic will serve 30,000 veterans living in Fremont and Southern Alameda County. Hitherto, veterans had to travel either to Palo Alto, Livermore or beyond for a doctor's appointment. That is still possible but a local VA clinic will life easier.

The project began in 1995 and came to fruition through the joint efforts of the VA, City of Fremont, SmithField Medical Development and many others.

"I love it!" enthused Gil Medeiros, a Vietnam veteran whose career has been spent with the VA and who helped install the equipment at the clinic and delivers supplies.

"There are a surprising number of veterans using the services and they have to travel so far, so it is a heartening to have this clinic in Fremont to serve them. Thank you, VA," said Mayor Bob Wasserman who has been a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) for more than 20 years.

The VA Fremont Clinic will provide primary care, mental health services and has a case manager on staff for service personnel returning from tours of duty. The Clinic is also partnered with Washington Hospital for services such as X-rays or stat blood work.

Robert Geldman, Administration Officer to the Deputy Chief of Staff of the VA, stated that the VA conducted a survey of the entire Bay Area before settling on Fremont for the new clinic's location. They discovered they had a real deficit of care in Alameda and San Joaquin counties.

"We were elated at the location in Fremont because we knew we had a community partner here with Washington Hospital and this was perfect," said Geldman. "We're currently looking at two large properties to build a multi-specialty facility, which will be five years down the road."

In the meantime, the VA will have the opportunity to gauge community response to the new clinic and ensure Bay Area veterans know the facility exists. The clinic has a full medical staff on duty Monday through Friday and is now open.
