Commemorating victory over oppression, Purim is the most festive of Jewish holidays with costumes, noisemakers called 'greggars' and tasty delicacies.
'Magical Mystery Spiel,' set to the music of the Beatles, is a musical comedy version of the story of Purim - a tale of Queen Esther, a young woman who marries a King but must hide her Jewish faith. When the King's evil Advisor, Haman, threatens her people with death, she learns that in order to save them she must find the courage to acknowledge and reveal her true identity.
Presented on February 20 and 21 at Temple Beth Torah, this musical is being directed by Matt Ballin, the Drama teacher at Washington High School in Fremont.
Don't miss out on this fabulous production as there will be only two opportunities to see the show: an evening performance on Saturday, February 20 at 8 p.m. and a morning performance on Sunday, February 21 at 10:30 a.m.
Advance General Admission tickets are available for a donation of only $4 for Seniors, $5 for Adults. A limited number of $20 Preferred seats and $50 VIP seats are available for advance purchase only and can only be purchased by calling the Temple Office at (510) 656-7141. In the unique tradition of spiels (glib speech), here are just a few of the humorously renamed production numbers, with the original Beatles' song titles in parentheses:
Opening number: 'Rabbi Pepper's Only Purim Band' (Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band); Song sung by the men at the King's party: 'All We Need are Girls' (All You Need is Love); and Esther trying out for queen at the beauty contest: 'Esther Day' (Yesterday).
The Beatles, referred to as the Wise Men, are dressed according to the Sgt. Pepper mode and overall costumes reflect the 1960's. Many well-known and beloved Beatles songs are featured throughout the performance in entertaining versions.
Come join the 'Magical Mystery Spiel!' These productions are always popular and a hit with families, so get your tickets early! All are welcome to participate in and enjoy this true community event.
