Silicon Valley Reads program is the initiative of Santa Clara County Office of Education, the Santa Clara County Library and the San Jose Public Library Foundation to promote the habit of reading. Events are scheduled to encourage participants to read and discuss Silicon Valley Reads books at libraries, bookstores, community organizations, and businesses. Some of the free programs in Milpitas are among the 75 Silicon Valley Reads events taking place in Santa Clara County this year.

Master Chef Martin Yan will appear at the Milpitas Library on Sunday, February 7, at 3 p.m. The author of more than 30 cookbooks and star of the PBS series Yan Can Cook, Chef Yan will demonstrate how to cook fresh, healthy Asian-inspired meals. According to Supervising Librarian, Melanie McInerney, book signing will follow the event.

Preston Maring, M.D., Associate Physician-in-Chief at Kaiser Permanente Oakland Medical Center, founder of the Kaiser Permanente farmers market program, and contributor to 'Eating Well in Season: The Farmers Market Cookbook' will discuss the role of fresh produce in preventive medicine. Book signing will follow. "Healthy Cooking for Teens." Learn from a professional chef how to make delicious and healthy snacks. Take home quick and easy recipes that are microwave-friendly.

Co-sponsored by Indian Business Professional Women, a panel discussion on the themes of 'In Defense of Food' will be held at India Community Center. The discussion will feature a physician, dietician and health food 'junkie.' The newest selection for the Silicon Valley Reads community program, 'In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto by Michael Pollan' is a best-selling examination of what is wrong with the American diet and what people should do to avoid over-processed, artificially-enhanced foods.
