Proposed Walmart expansion update
Submitted By Derecka Mehrens
The Milpitas Coalition for a Better Community held a successful community breakfast event about the proposed Walmart expansion on Ranch Drive last Saturday, January 9 at the Sunnyhills United Methodist Church. The coalition is opposed to the expansion project for a number of reasons, including worries about job loss, neighborhood blight, and the proposed sale of alcohol at the site.
The breakfast was attended by almost 50 community residents. The group plans to continue outreach to the community and the planning commission in the weeks ahead. Panelists included Cathy Deppe, Bill Ferguson, Sunnyhills Neighborhood Association, Chonsoo Lee, Sunnyhills United, Ron Lind, UFCW Local 5 and long-time resident, Jerry Lee Ruggiero, Milpitas Nob Hill Food worker and Sahuhi Saddique, Ahmadiyya Muslim Mosque. "The final EIR (Environmental Impact Report) environmental report will be released sometime next week. The item is tentatively on the agenda for February 24 planning commission meeting," said Cindy Hom, the city's assistant planner.
