Parenting with purpose
By Alyson Whitaker
Anyone with a child under age five knows the challenges that arise while navigating the adventures of parenthood. Tantrums in the aisle of a grocery store can tax even the most patient parent. As children are learning language, concerns may arise over speech development or delays. In a society that leans toward over-scheduling, parents may feel pressure to involve their young children in too many activities, play groups, and social experiences, and then feel concern when their child does not act appropriately.
First-time parents often want to know what is normal or expected and what is not. For parents with more than one child, questions may arise regarding differences in development; there is a tendency to compare siblings. Answers and solutions to these challenges and concerns can sometimes be hard to find.
The Center for Speech, Language and Occupational Therapy (CSLOT) will present a series of free workshops to the public addressing these concerns.
Beginning in January, a monthly 'Parenting with Purpose' workshop will be held at the Fremont Main Library. Experts in various fields of early childhood development and education will be on hand to present each topic and discuss challenges and solutions for parents.
The workshop series is aimed at parents of children ages five and under - whether developing normally or presenting signs of delayed development. Research has shown that early intervention greatly increases the chances that a child with developmental delays will have success later in life.
Each one-hour workshop will begin at 7 p.m. with a presentation period, followed by a brief Question & Answer session. Workshop leaders will be available to offer suggestions on resources for additional assistance. Free childcare will be available on-site and the workshops are free of charge.
It can be tricky navigating through the early years of childhood. While parents may still have to deal with the tantrums, speech concerns, and other challenges, the hope is that these workshops will give them the resources they need to deal with them in an effective manner.
