A much improved Irvington High School girls JV soccer team came up against perennial soccer power house American High School on a warm January afternoon.

Irvington had not beaten American for several seasons, but had high hopes coming into the game having just tied Washington High School, 1-1, on a late goal by Rachel Heng.

Irvington's Lady Vikings started lively and immediately went on the offense forcing the American team to play desperate defense. Erica Ohye and Rachel Heng both had good chances before Rhian Dunn took a free kick from the edge of the goal box which the American defense failed to clear and Megan Dunn pounced on the bouncing ball and powered it home with a left footed shot from four yards out.

The goal woke the American team up and they eventually got into the game, but Irvington's defense was up to the task, with fullbacks Mehartaj Gill and Zuleyma Ortiz-Flores both having standout games. The Irvington defense held out and the halftime score remained 1-0 to Irvington.

Irvington started the second half strongly, with the Viking midfield stepping up their game, and most of the play took place in the American half of the field, although American was dangerous on breakaways.

It was not until 10 minutes from time when Irvington's constant pressure was awarded with a second goal, and suitably it came from the hardworking midfield when left midfielder Molly Cory got the ball just outside the 18-yard box and lobbed the ball over the keeper to hit the right post and into the goal off the confused keeper.

Central midfielder Sarina Utamsing rounded out the scoring with three minutes to go, scoring from 30 yards out with a powerful shot over the helpless keeper to make the final score 3-0 in favor of Irvington.

The Irvington clean sheet was shared by goalies Andrea Hanna and Zarin Khan who both made critical saves while Irvington was only one goal ahead.
